Forward Singapore (Steward Pillar): Working together for a green, liveable and climate-resilient Singapore
Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Ms Grace Fu launched public engagements on environmental sustainability under the Forward Singapore Steward pillar at the Partners for the Environment Forum on 19 September 2022. Participants, comprising partners from the community, public and private sectors, came together to discuss environmental issues facing Singapore. In her speech at the event, Minister Grace Fu emphasised the importance of considering the trade-offs and considerations when building a more sustainable future. For instance, how we address the inter-generational equity of climate change, how we can pursue competing economic, social and environmental goals; as well as understanding the roles and responsibilities of Government, businesses and individuals in this endeavour.
This event also marked the start of Climate Action Week 2022, rallying the nation to take collective action against climate change. More than 80 partners from corporates, community groups and schools organised a total of 140 activities during the week. Corporate partners including Mr Jack Moy, CEO of Sustenir, Ms Mathilda D’silva, CEO of the Ocean Purpose Project, and Mr Goh Chee Kiong, CEO of Charge+, joined Senior Minister of State Mr Chee Hong Tat, in a panel discussion at the event and exchanged views with participants about some of the challenges and opportunities in charting a path towards a green, liveable and climate-resilient Singapore.

Three key areas of focus for environmental sustainability under the Steward Pillar
Launched earlier in June 2022, the Forward Singapore exercise seeks to refresh Singapore’s social compact across six thematic pillars - Empower, Equip, Care, Build, Steward and Unite.
The Steward pillar comprises environmental and fiscal sustainability. Under environmental sustainability, the focus will be on fostering a more sustainable way of life that stewards our environmental resources responsibly for future generations.
The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment will be engaging stakeholders on the following three key areas:
a. Social compact across generations: What should our generation do to minimise the cost of climate change to future generations?
b. Social compact among Singaporeans: How can we continue to grow Singapore’s economic pie sustainably, while distributing it in a way that ensures no one is left behind?
c. Roles and responsibilities of Government, businesses, community and people: What must each of us do, as stewards of our environment?
